The decision
Fathom needed to upgrade its waterjet capability at its Ithaca operation. The team compared alternatives through an extensive test programme, using demanding applications and its own manufacturing experience as the benchmark.

A complementary process
Finecut complements Fathom's existing laser, waterjet, photochemical etching, wire EDM, CNC and additive manufacturing capabilities. It creates a route for intricate parts that require high precision, clean cut surfaces and no thermal impact.
Because the process is driven directly from CAD/CAM and does not depend on material conductivity, Fathom can apply it across industries including aerospace, defence, medical, energy and technology.
From installation to expansion
The first system was delivered in September 2024. Installation and Finepart Academy training were completed within a week, and Fathom reported approximately 56 operating hours per week together with improved cutting surfaces, higher precision and lower operating costs compared with its previous experience.
The relationship has since expanded to two Finecut systems—evidence that the capability has become part of Fathom's broader contract manufacturing offer.
