Haynes 282. No thermal compromise.
Brogren Industries selected Finecut to produce precision features in a difficult nickel-based superalloy while protecting the material properties required in demanding turbine applications.

The material challenge
Brogren Industries manufactures advanced components for aerospace and industrial gas turbines. Haynes 282 combines high-temperature strength, thermal stability and weldability, but its strength and work-hardening behaviour make it difficult to machine.
Thermal cutting can alter the microstructure at the cut edge and create a heat-affected zone or recast layer. For components exposed to cyclic loads, protecting the original material condition is central to process integrity.
A cold cutting process
Finecut removes material through controlled abrasive erosion rather than heat. The process therefore cuts Haynes 282 without melting the edge, creating a recast layer or introducing a thermally affected zone.
Following a successful proof of concept, Brogren integrated the Finecut system into its operation for the target application and other complex projects.
Precision with material integrity
The result combined the required geometry with minimal impact on the material. The case demonstrated how micro abrasive waterjet can support aerospace suppliers when dimensional accuracy alone is not enough and the cut process must also preserve metallurgical performance.
“The machine and equipment have worked very well.”
